How to Buy Stone
Stone is available from a variety of outlets, but how do you know which to choose? The answer to that question depends in large part on the type of stone you want to buy, and the quantity.
If you simply need a few flagstones or a small amount of gravel, then home improvement stores should have what you need. However, if the job is quite large, then you may need to visit a landscaping center, a hardscaping store or even a quarry. In these places, you’ll find much more selection—and the ability to order stone in bulk, which will give you enough for those bigger projects.
When you want to buy stone to make a statement—such as a boulder to anchor a garden bed—then buy it somewhere that you can look at the stones and choose the one you want. Each will be different in shape, size and color. The key is to think of it similarly to how you might think of purchasing art. You wouldn’t buy any old piece of art to hang in your home. Rather, you’d purchase something you enjoy, and that fits the theme you’re creating.
Regardless of the types of stone you want or the quantity, it’s always best to shop around and get a feel for what is available, first. You may decide that you’d like to switch from one type of stone to another, or that shopping for stone has inspired you to do more with your landscape!
